Notes
See Pennington catalog entry 1017 for full details on the various editions of the
engraving and the Latin quotations incuded. He also cites a letter from Rev. Thomas
Barlow to Dugdale expressing appreciation of Hollar’s work and consent to paying the
£5 that Dugdale is charging him for the dedication.
In the Monasticon version, the '133' is erased and '297' is added in the lower left corner. Additionally, there is some re-work, including diagonal shading added on ground between choir and South transept.
In the 1716 edition of St Paul's, an engraved copy in the same direction by John Harris is included.
An article in Antiquities Journal XLIII, 1963, pp. 128-32 suggests that Hollar's design of the spire may have come from a drawing done by William Cole in 1654.
